Sociaphobia

Once a rare condition, sociaphobia is best characterized by anxiety pertaining to any variety of social interactions. Now one of the most common of phobias, many people suffer from some degree of sociaphobia. In its most extreme form, it is also called social anxiety disorder and can be a chronic problem that easily reduced the quality of one’s life. Often persistant and difficult to overcome, sociaphobia makes interactions with others not only difficult, but often nearly impossible. Here at Mentaline.com, you can find trained professionals to help people deal with the varied and sometimes chronic effects of sociaphobia.

Symptoms of Sociaphobia

Less severe forms of sociaphobia are actually a normal emotion in a child’s developmental growth. These fears first occur in infancy by a remarked fear of strangers and continue into adolescence where fear of peer rejection, public speaking and extreme self-consciousness are common. Most commonly these anxieties are set aside as a person enters adulthood, perhaps only manifesting as shyness, a fear of public speaking, or timidity. However, any of these behaviors may easily develop into more chronic forms of sociaphobia that inhibit daily life.

Those who suffer from chronic sociaphobia often have symptoms that are  triggered by the extreme fear they feel upon the anticipation of social interactions. Fear of being embarrassed in public, extreme sweating or blushing, an active avoidance of social situations, and the belief that you may be judged harshly for your behavior in public are all common symptoms of sociaphobia. There are also other, more narrowly focused specific social phobias, like a fear of eating in public or using public restrooms.

Dangers of Sociaphobia

Due to the persistent and ever-present nature of social interactions, sociophobia can often increase over time, creating a serious decrease in overall well-being due to omnipresent anxiety. What’s more, the increased concern over the opinion of others can lead to the total avoidance of social interactions, which in its most extreme form can lead to a dramatic form of agoraphobia. Sociaphobia may also be a result of underlying medical issues like hypothyroidism.

Treatment for Sociaphobia

There are a variety of treatments for sociaphobia that vary with the type and seriousness of the phobia itself. Including therapy, group therapy, and sometimes even medications for extreme cases, this phobia can become a very manageable condition. On Mentaline.com you can book online therapy sessions with therapists and empathetic clinicians offer support and guidance that can help you to overcome your social anxiety to lead an ultimately fulfilling life.
