Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Posttraumatic stress order (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that is brought on by a traumatic, usually life threatening event in a person's life. While the exact situation may differ, the symptoms of PTSD usually follow the same patterns. Sleep problems, reliving the event, detachment and avoiding talking about the event are all subtle signs that posttraumatic stress disorder may be a problem.

While it is common for soldiers to suffer from this mental disorder, it affects other people as well. The symptoms can occur up to six months after the initial traumatic event. The exact causes of this anxiety disorder aren't known, but they are thought to be brought on by extremely traumatic events. Even though the cause isn’t known, there are many treatment options available for those who suffer from PTSD.

Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

The specific symptoms of PTSD that appear will vary from individual to individual, but they will begin to appear after a major, traumatic event in a person's life. For instance, many people returning from war suffer from PTSD. Some of the physical signs of this disorder are problems with sleeping - insomnia, nightmares, or a combination of both. Some people may relive the event over and over, sometimes hallucinating.

Many people will withdraw from friends and families due to a number of problems related to PTSD. The degree to which these symptoms affect a person is going to vary depending on the person and the event. That said, some may find the symptoms so bad that they try to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol, causing a substance abuse problem. Others may have problems with major depression. Before it gets this far, treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder should be considered.

Treatment for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Treatment for PTSD can help relieve the intensity of some of the symptoms. With online therapy and counseling from our professional partners, you can learn more about PTSD while getting help from therapists trained to help with posttraumatic stress disorder. Dealing with PTSD can be exhausting, especially for people facing the symptoms alone.

Whatever the life threatening event that caused the onset of PTSD, psychotherapy can help a person deal with all the issues that come with it. While there is no way to go back and change the past so that the event never happened, it is possible for a person to work on changing how able they are to continue with their life without the past affecting them in a negative way.
