Necrophobia
Although a single term often indicates only fear of one thing, necrophobia is actually the term for two distinct fears. The first is a fear of dead things or corpses. The second, and perhaps more debilitating, is the general fear of death itself. While both are completely natural worries, for necrophobics, these two issues are a much more expansive problem that can easily affect the overall quality of their life. Necrophobics cannot be rationally talked out of their fear or expected to just “get over it” without help from family, friends, and in some cases, professionals.
Symptoms of Necrophobia
Necrophobics easily become fixated on dying or things related to death. While most people come to terms with the reality that everything dies, necrophobics need much more help to not become obsessed with this eventuality. A constant preoccupation with death or avoiding it is the most marked symptom for those who suffer from a fear of death. Panic attacks may arise any time this fear is triggered, which can be often. For necrophobics who exhibit more fear of dead things, events like funerals can become torturous and may instigate panic attacks and other anxiety related behaviors. Being near or even the possibility of being near a dead animal is a cause for great concern, and often people are preoccupied with what happens to a body after death.
Dangers of Necrophobia
Due to the ever present inevitability of their fear, necrophobia can naturally and all too easily lead to other extreme phobias and behaviors. Many severe sufferers of necrophobia can become agoraphobic, refusing to leave their house because of the increased danger in the outside world. Alternatively, they may exhibit symptoms similar to a hypochondriac, constantly afraid that every little cough or sneeze might be life threatening. Because of these dangers of the problem getting worse, treatment is important.
Treatment for Necrophobia
Logical thought and conversation aren’t going to be enough to talk a true necrophobic out of their fears, and often religious beliefs don’t solve the problem either. For severe sufferers of this fear, the best treatment is therapy and guidance given by a trained and empathetic individual. On Mentaline.com, you can find highly skilled therapists who understand the depth of a necrophobic’s fears and can help them to sort through the problem, identifying triggers that may make the symptoms worse. In addition, online counseling can offer much needed emotional support through interaction with others going through the same thing.
Definition of Necrophobia
The term necrophobia actually refers to two separate fears: the fear of dying or a general fear of dead things or corpses. Counseling and therapy are both good options for the treatment of necrophobia.
