Jealousy

A common problem with many relationships, jealousy may be cute in small doses, but when things get out of control, it can lead to the destruction of a relationship quickly. Even some people in otherwise healthy relationships may have problems with jealousy, although it can affect people who have recently gone through a separation, break-up or divorce. While people display jealousy in slightly different ways depending on their personality, there are many common elements, especially when the jealousy becomes destructive. Here at Mentaline.com, we can help with learning to deal with jealousy before it becomes a huge problem for a relationship.

Symptoms of Jealousy

Jealousy is displayed by people in slightly different ways. For example, some may turn a cold shoulder to their partner when they are jealous, even withholding sexual intimacy. In other cases, jealousy may lead to attempts to control another person, which can lead to power struggles and other problems in a relationship. While people are going to exhibit the signs of jealousy in different ways, if it is thought to be a problem, relationship therapy should be considered before jealousy leads to more serious situation. There are many risks associated with letting jealousy get out of hand.

Dangers of Jealousy

As you may know, extreme jealousy can cause quite a strain on a relationship. Jealousy can cause people to act in irrational ways. Depending on the dynamics of the relationship, some partners may submit to the controlling behavior of the jealous partner while others may lash out, causing extreme conflict. If jealousy is not "talked about" at all, there is a good chance that it can lead to many other relationship problems. This is why getting help before jealousy gets out of hand is such a good idea. Even in the short term, jealousy can lead to angry rages that can have serious consequences if acted on.

Getting Help Dealing with Jealousy

Here at Mentaline.com, we have trained therapists that know about jealousy and all the negative effects it can have on a relationship. Instead of being moody and withdrawing from society or lashing out when pangs of jealousy hit, there are techniques that can be utilized to help deal with this emotion in a healthy way. When left unchecked, there is a good chance that jealousy can be a contributing factor to a relationship not working in the long run. Learning to deal with jealousy and understanding the root causes can result in healthier relationships.

Definition of Jealousy
