Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is, quite simply, abuse in the context of a relationship. Most commonly, it’s between sexual partners, whether they are married, dating, or cohabitating. It can also include children or friend and other family members. In many places in the world, domestic violence is still not even considered a crime, instead regarding it as a personal issue in a private world. Experts estimate that only about a third of domestic violence cases are actually reported in the United States. With very serious and far-reaching physical and emotional effects, the real tragedy is that domestic violence is a preventable problem.

Kinds of Domestic Violence

Like any other kind of abuse, domestic violence can range in severity and type. While most people are familiar with physical manifestations, still others involve emotional and sexual abuse. Stalking and intimidation can be another kind of domestic violence, wherein the abuser makes their target constantly live under a fear of being followed or punished for some perceived crime in the eyes of their abuser. Economic deprivation is another manifestation of domestic violence that can further lead to the target feeling like they are alone and isolated and have no option but to remain in the negative situation.

Dangers of Domestic Violence

In almost all domestic violence cases, one person in the relationship is exerting undue power and control over another. This constant need to control the other person can result in erratic and dangerous behavior that can make the victim live in a state of fear and anxiety. A victim of domestic abuse can easily feel trapped in their situation, cut off from friends and family or any financial means of removing themselves from the situation. Depression and post traumatic stress disorder are common emotional problems for survivors of domestic violence. In cases where physical elements are involved, severe traumatic injury and even death has occurred.

Dealing with Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a complicated and heartbreaking situation to find yourself or a friend in. It's important to understand the emotional complexities that most victims of domestic violence face. Whether you are a survivor of domestic violence trying to sort through your residual emotions or you simply are trying to help a victim of domestic violence, you might consider booking an online therapy session here on Mentaline.com to deal with the situation thoroughly and properly so that everyone can move on with their lives.
