Dissociative Amnesia

When someone experiences a very traumatic experience, they may block memories of the event as well as any memories that are related to it. This differs from other types of amnesia in that it is primarily psychological in nature. That is, it’s not caused by damage to the brain. While it typically affects children, it does occasionally appear in adults. The sudden onset of memory problems is one indicator that dissociative amnesia may be present. If it is diagnosed, online therapy here with therapists on Mentaline.com can help. Dissociative amnesia can cause many other problems in a person’s life if it’s left untreated. This is why understanding the causes, is so important.

Cause of Dissociative Amnesia

As mentioned, the primary cause of dissociative amnesia is thought to be some sort of abuse - physical, mental or sexual - that causes a child to block out certain memories. The amount of memories blocked varies from child to child, but in general they stem around the abuse that is suffered and also memories connected to that in various ways. Because children are still developing, this blocking of memory can lead to other mental and social problems. The causes of dissociative amnesia may differ, but the risks of this disorder are the same for most people. This is why understanding the symptoms, is so important.

Symptoms of Dissociative Amnesia

The main symptom of this dissociative disorder is the sudden onset of memory problems, including a difficulty remembering personal information. Along with this quick memory loss - usually after a traumatic experience - anxiety, confusion, and depression may appear as well. If the symptoms appear, getting proper diagnosis is important. While the abuse that happened is important for healing, dealing with the symptoms of dissociative amnesia is crucial to avoid the risks that come with this disorder.

Treatment for Dissociative Amnesia

Psychotherapy including cognitive therapy is one of the most recommended ways to treat dissociative amnesia. Here at Mentaline.com, you can find therapists who offer online therapy and who specialize in dissociative amnesia. It is important that any therapy concentrate on the root cause of the dissociative amnesia as well as the symptoms. Most of the therapists on Mentaline.com, believe in helping with the symptoms as well as dealing with any larger issues that may be present.
