Delirium

Delirium is a disturbance in the brain that causes a quick change between different mental states. Depending on the exact type of delirium - usually diagnosed according to the cause - the symptoms will vary slightly, but in general they include problems with memory, disorientation, and abrupt emotional changes or odd behavior. In general, there are three main types of delirium that are diagnosed. Each of them have serious symptoms and dangers associated with them. Because of this, treatment for delirium is recommended if any of the symptoms appear. The online therapy from therapists here on Mentaline.com can help with delirium, but before we explain how, here is some other information about delirium you may find useful.

Types of Delirium

While most delirium is a result of intoxication by or withdrawal from substances that are frequently abused, there are other abnormalities in the brain or diseases that may cause delirium. These are the three main types of delirium.

  • Substance intoxication delirium is caused primarily by the abuse of one or multiple substances.
  • Substance withdrawal delirium occurs when a person stops using a substance that is frequently abused.
  • Unspecified delirium is diagnosed when the symptoms are not related to substance abuse but are unknown.

Symptoms of Delirium

While the symptoms of delirium are going to be different depending on the cause, there are some similarities between the different types of delirium. Overall, the symptoms center around emotional changes and problems with short term memory. Trouble communicating clearly with language is another indicator that delirium is occurring. When the symptoms of delirium appear, it is important to get a diagnosis so that treatment can begin before the risk of dangers associated with delirium increase.

Dangers of  Delirium

When the symptoms of delirium appear and are not treated correctly, there are many risks that become possibilities. In some cases, like delirium tremens (which is related to alcohol withdrawal) there is a small but very real chance of death. Also, depending on the age of the person experiencing delirium and their environment, there is a danger of physical accidents or wandering off and getting lost. Left untreated, there are chances that other mental disorders may materialize making the situation worse.

Treatment for Delirium

Treatment for delirium is going to vary wildly depending on the specific type that is diagnosed, but in general, online therapy is able to deal with all the types of delirium. With trained therapists who specialize in delirium and online counseling that can offer support from peers, Mentaline.com offers a modern way to get the help and support needed to deal with this medical condition.

Definition of Delirium

Delirium is a disturbance in consciousness that results in a quick change between mental states. There are different causes of delirium, but the symptoms generally include changes in emotion and behavior. Disorganized thinking is another sign of delirium. Treatment for delirium is possible, with the exact types of therapy determined by the specific type of delirium.
