Bipolar II Disorder

Bipolar II disorder is differentiated from bipolar I disorder in that a person never experiences the full effects of the mania stage of the emotional equation. That said, symptoms still include mood swings (though not as intense), depression, as well as other physical and psychological problems. While it may be considered a more mild form of bipolar disorder, the risks and dangers of bipolar II disorder are just as real. It isn't known exactly what causes this mood disorder, but it is thought to be connected to a chemical imbalance in the brain. Even if the source of the mental illness isn't known, there are things that can help with treatment.

Symptoms of Bipolar II Disorder

While bipolar II disorder doesn't have a peak period of full-on mania, there are minor symptoms associated with the "up" periods of this mood disorder.

  • Jumping from idea to idea
  • Rapid and loud talking
  • Increased energy
  • Decreased need for sleep

These are some of the symptoms that may occur when on the depression end of the bipolar emotional cycle.

  • Lethargy and a lack of energy are common symptoms that depression has hit someone who is manic depressive.
  • Sleeping long periods is another sign of depression occurring in bipolar II disorder.

Dangers of Bipolar II Disorder

As with other mood disorders, there is always the risk that a person with the mental illness will hurt themselves or the people around them. In addition, there are serious risks of suicide in some people on the depression side of the equation. While the manic episodes experienced during bipolar II disorder aren't as pronounced as in bipolar I disorder, they are still present and can have negative consequences on a person's life.

Treatment for Bipolar II Disorder

Because of the serious risks of this mental illness, it is crucial to find the best treatment available. On Mentaline.com, you can find excellent therapists who know both sides of bipolar disorder and can help with all the issues that come with bipolar II disorder. While it may be a little more mild than bipolar I disorder, treatment is still recommended. With psychotherapy and guided counseling, dealing with bipolar disorder can be made a little easier.

Definition of Bipolar II Disorder

Bipolar II disorder is a mental illness that causes a person to experience highs (mania) and lows (depression.) Bipolar II disorder is different from bipolar I, in that in this type a person rarely reaches a "full on" mania period. The symptoms for bipolar II disorder include mood swings, trouble sleeping, and the lack of reaching the heights of mania. Therapy and counseling are good ways to help deal with bipolar II disorder.
