Anorexia Nervosa

Some people will eat less when they're trying to lose weight, but those who suffer from anorexia nervosa go to extremes when limiting the amount of food they eat. This causes drastic negative effects on the body, leading to starvation and the inability to maintain a healthy weight. The causes of anorexia vary for most people, but most cases stem from genetic conditions that are passed down and other mental disorders, including anxiety, depression and personality disorders

Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa

Depending on the degree of anorexia nervosa, symptoms may include unhealthy skin, extreme weight loss quickly, loss of muscle mass and fat tissue, and various other problems associated with the body not getting the nutrients it needs to stay healthy. Even thinning hair and irregular menstrual periods may be some of the effects of anorexia. The symptoms of anorexia may vary slightly from person to person, but there are common signs that someone is suffering from anorexia.

Causes of Anorexia Nervosa

As mentioned, anorexia is a mental disorder, but the causes of it can stem from any number of things. Genetics and societal norms may have an effect on the problem for some, even intensifying it in some cases. Many people that have this eating disorder also suffer from other mental conditions, which play a role in the anorexia taking control of their life. No matter the cause of anorexia, there are solutions if you suffer from it.

Treating Anorexia Nervosa

In the past problems with eating may have been kept quiet for one reason or another, meaning there are many people - men and women - who didn't get any help dealing with their eating disorder. Things have come a long way over the years, but there are still many people who are afraid to step-up and get help for themselves for various reasons. In the 21st century, the Internet is helping with this by giving people an option to get help with anorexia online. From counseling to support from other people who suffer from anorexia, the Internet is a wonderful place. If it has already gone too far, a hospital stay may be needed for health reasons, but to treat the root causes of anorexia, online therapy is a viable option.

Definition of Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that typically involves extreme limits on the amount of food that is taken into the body, effectively starvation. This is usually caused by a fear of gaining weight that can become intense and overpowering, leading to a desire to do everything possible to stop gaining weight, including starvation. The result is severe weight loss that can have other, long lasting effects on the body.
