Over 23 million Americans, or 9.6 percent of the total U.S. population over the age of 12, suffer from alcohol or drug addiction. Sixty-three percent of Americans are impacted by addiction, either their own addiction or that of a family member. The demand for drug treatment centers and recovery programs is growing in response to Americans’ struggle with addiction. Over four million Americans, or 1.6 percent of the total U.S. population over the age of 12, receive treatment for drug or alcohol abuse each year. These patients seek treatment in self-help addiction recovery groups, in- and outpatient rehabilitation facilities, and in private doctors’ offices. Drug and alcohol treatment and recovery programs can help those struggling with addiction: drug abuse treatment and recovery can reduce the rate of drug use among patients by 40 to 60 percent.
